Private (Egotism)
Video-installation at the mediaterra festival 2002

Interventions to the site of the dead airport will be related to memory, the container in which the selective association of images takes place, a site of evolving experiences like the communicating vessels of Breton in the interpretation of dreams: The vessel containing the real communicates with that of its likenesses. The electronic media assimilate data from the material world and return them processed, thus redetermining it. Dynamic “familiarisation” is a game of converting and reconstructing concepts.
The viewer sees images, and hears sounds by reason of the airport site so that the place becomes more familiar, either drawn from memories, or from the imaginary spaces being proposed. The real airport site becomes confused with the constructed events of the videos and the announcements heard over the loudspeakers.
The former Athens East Terminal is of interest to the group because the building was designed by the renowned architect Eero Saarinen who exerted a strong influence on Greek modernism and designed other significant airports including the TWA Terminal at JFK Airport in New York.
