Bodyspace - Spacebody, Spring School | Bauhaus University Weimar, 2022
Development of a spatial idea, in which body awareness in space plays the dominant role
Tutors: Dr. Luise Nerlich, Manolis Iliakis
Duration: online-classes > January and February 2022 | on site in Weimar > March and April 2022
The course aimed to develop a spatial idea in groups where body-awareness plays a crucial role in space. We attempted to explore the corporeal content through multiple aspects in a spatial composition context. In the Bodyspace – Spacebody program, we explored the functions and the design of spaces in an authentic Bauhaus building and how these affected our body. The essence of architectural space was described in three stages: 1st level-layer of space: the skin; 2nd level-layer of space: the clothing; 3rd level-layer of space: the building / the interior space.
Physical experiments with the body and exercises with all the senses helped participants in perceiving the connection between context and design. If all of our senses are activated and trained, we can benefit from a wealth of experiences. Students worked in groups. It was recommended that in each group students from different specializations should work together.
In the workshop, the inner space of the body was related to the structure, color and surface, the light and shadow of the built space. The participants tried to “decode” the different journeys that can be taken within a building. How designed the architect Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) as a choreographer for the users of the building?
